Sign-On Letter: Indigenous Peoples' Concerns about the 30x30 Target

Nov. 26, 2022

Please consider endorsing this letter of concern in relation to the impacts of protected areas and fortress conservation on indigenous peoples' rights. The letter was prepared by Project Expedite Justice in anticipation of a target to be adopted at the Convention on Biodiversity COP15 to protect 30 percent of the world's lands and oceans by the year 2030. It makes specific calls to action to respect indigenous peoples' rights in the creation or expansion of protected areas.

Master's degree program focuses on revitalizing Native American languages

The degree program, housed in the Department of Linguistics in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, trains students in linguistics, language documentation, and language revitalization. It also aims to broaden the participation of Native American students in language sciences and graduate school.

Tribal and university leaders discuss advancing Native American health

Nov. 8, 2022

The second annual Tribal Leaders Summit was held Thursday and Friday at the Phoenix Bioscience Core, which houses the UArizona College of Medicine – Phoenix. With a theme of "Advancing Tribal Health," the event focused on UArizona Health Sciences programs that support the public health of tribal communities. The summit showcased research for and in partnership with Native American communities, as well as programs that provide tribal students with financial support to pursue medical school or study other health care disciplines.

Five entrepreneurs with San Carlos Apache Tribe make up the inaugural Native FORGE cohort

Nov. 1, 2022

Native FORGE, a University of Arizona program focused on supporting entrepreneurs in Arizona's tribal communities, has selected five entrepreneurs from the San Carlos Apache Tribe for the program's inaugural cohort.

Being named to the cohort means the five entrepreneurs – whose businesses include convenience stores, an events equipment rental service and a quilting company – will receive mentorship and technical assistance over the next year to help grow their businesses.

ENGL 102 Section Focused on Indigenous Issues

The University of Arizona Department of English and Native American Initiatives have partnered to offer a section of ENGL 102 that will focus on Indigenous issues. The course will be taught by Lecturer Steve Pelletier (Diné). Native American students and others interested in Indigenous literature are encouraged to enroll in this course. UArizona opens its first tribal microcampus to serve the Pascua Yaqui Tribe

A new University of Arizona microcampus will serve the Pascua Yaqui Tribe in Tucson, giving tribal members what leaders called a "homecourt advantage" to complete college degrees and certificates and access university technology, research and tutoring services.

New UArizona center to support Native American entrepreneurs

Aug. 16, 2022

The University of Arizona has received a five-year, $500,000 matching grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to establish a new center to support economic growth in tribal communities in Arizona.

Native FORGE will provide and facilitate high-quality entrepreneurship development and support services to underserved communities in Tucson and the 22 federally recognized Native American nations in Arizona.
