The University of Arizona Old Main now includes the name in Hopi

April 24, 2023

University of Arizona leaders welcomed Hopi Tribe Chairman Timothy Nuvangyaoma to campus Thursday for a ceremony to celebrate a new addition to the sign outside Old Main. It now includes the building's name in Hopi: Kiisonvi refers to "the focal point of a community where thoughts and prayers become one to benefit all life." There are plans to include more Indigenous languages on university building signs, with the hope of including all Native Nations in Arizona.

Virtual consultation with the Special Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples on Tourism and the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

April 19, 2023

The Special Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples will hold a virtual consultation to inform his annual report to the United Nations General Assembly on Tourism and the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Special Rapporteur wishes to receive inputs by way of response to the questions that will inform his report to be presented at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in October 2023.

Call for inputs: Green financing, a just transition to protect Indigenous Peoples’ rights

April 3, 2023

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples requests inputs from Member States and inter-governmental entities, UN agencies, Indigenous Peoples and organizations, particularly Indigenous women’s organizations,  civil society actors, humanitarian and development organizations, national human rights institutions, business representatives and other stakeholders, to contribute to the preparation of the report. Submissions Deadline: 21 April 2023.

Indigenous Law Course Ushers In First of Many Courses Offered at Microcampus

The UArizona Family & Community Medicine's American Indian Youth Wellness Initiative is hiring a Research Assistant responsible for contributing to day-to-day research activities and contributing to research progress and evaluation, providing critical project updates to the study team. Professor Whiteman Runs Him Weighs in on Established Water Rights Doctrine

March 19, 2023

University of Arizona Law Associate Clinical Professor and Tribal Justice Clinic Director Heather Whiteman Runs Him joined a coalition of Indian law professors and lawyers from the Native American Rights Fund to file an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Arizona v. Navajo Nation.
 
The brief urges the Supreme Court to uphold the Winters water rights doctrine, established by the Supreme Court in 1908, and to enforce the Navajo Nation’s water rights pursuant to the United States’ trust obligation.
