UArizona celebrates tribal communities and students during Native American Heritage Month

Five entrepreneurs with San Carlos Apache Tribe make up the inaugural Native FORGE cohort

Nov. 1, 2022

Native FORGE, a University of Arizona program focused on supporting entrepreneurs in Arizona's tribal communities, has selected five entrepreneurs from the San Carlos Apache Tribe for the program's inaugural cohort.

Being named to the cohort means the five entrepreneurs – whose businesses include convenience stores, an events equipment rental service and a quilting company – will receive mentorship and technical assistance over the next year to help grow their businesses.

ENGL 102 Section Focused on Indigenous Issues

The University of Arizona Department of English and Native American Initiatives have partnered to offer a section of ENGL 102 that will focus on Indigenous issues. The course will be taught by Lecturer Steve Pelletier (Diné). Native American students and others interested in Indigenous literature are encouraged to enroll in this course. Please share the news with first-year students or those looking to take ENGL 102.

UArizona opens its first tribal microcampus to serve the Pascua Yaqui Tribe

Sept. 7, 2022

A new University of Arizona microcampus will serve the Pascua Yaqui Tribe in Tucson, giving tribal members what leaders called a "homecourt advantage" to complete college degrees and certificates and access university technology, research and tutoring services.

New UArizona center to support Native American entrepreneurs

Aug. 16, 2022

The University of Arizona has received a five-year, $500,000 matching grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to establish a new center to support economic growth in tribal communities in Arizona.

Native FORGE will provide and facilitate high-quality entrepreneurship development and support services to underserved communities in Tucson and the 22 federally recognized Native American nations in Arizona.

State Tribal, Rural Areas Focus Internally for Nursing Needs

The Arizona Area Health Education Center (AzAHEC) Program at the UArizona Health Sciences recently selected the Arizona Advisory Council on Indian Health Care to develop a new American Indian Health AHEC Regional Center dedicated to developing health profession education initiatives and expanding access to health care for tribal communities in Arizona.

Tribal Area Health Education Center will address tribal health care needs, train workforce

Aug. 12, 2022

The University of Arizona Health Sciences-based Arizona Area Health Education Center Program, also known as AzAHEC, will work with the Arizona Advisory Council on Indian Health Care to develop the new American Indian Health AHEC Regional Center. The center, dubbed AIH-AHEC, will be dedicated to developing health profession education initiatives and expanding access to health care for tribal communities in Arizona.

This year’s sessions will explain why and how race and CRT are being deployed in current legislative assaults on honest and inclusive education and what advocates need to understand about the disinformation campaign. We will also analyze why the particular assaults on CRT and racial justice education land differently to even those whom we count as our allies. By carefully analyzing the series of distortions and misdirections about CRT, we hope to educate constituents about what CRT is and what it was before right-wing operatives distorted and defamed it.
