The two grants establish the foundation for the Native Center for Disabilities, administered by the Sonoran Center for Excellence in Disabilities in the UArizona College of Medicine – Tucson’s Department of Family and Community Medicine. The Native Center for Disabilities will provide on-site and virtual trainings, continuing education, workshops, community events and other disability and culturally related services.

A historic partnership between the Arizona Community Foundation and the UArizona College of Medicine – Phoenix will provide $306,000 in grant funding to support nine Native American students — three students per year for three years — on their journey through the Pathway Scholars Program and into medical school.

This fall, Alex Soto, who received his master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Arizona’s Knowledge River Program in 2020, was appointed director of Arizona State University Library’s Labriola National American Indian Data Center.

Felisia Tagaban Gaskin, former graduate assistant for Native SOAR, recently transitioned from the Native SOAR team to a full-time Student Relations Coordinator and Recruiter for The University of Arizona Office of Admissions, College of Education and Sunnyside Unified School District.

This project is a partnership between the University of Arizona College of Education's Indigenous Teacher Education Program (ITEP), the Digital Innovation and Learning Lab (DIALL), and the Agnese Nelms Haury Program in Environment and Social Justice.

For the first seven-week session of Spring 2022, Dr. Jameson (JD) Lopez will teach this “Topics in Higher Education” course (HED 696). The course explores how to improve data collection and analysis for indigenous communities.

Yaqui tribe member Daniel Vega, who is from Tucson, graduated from the Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Built Environments program in December 2021. Continuing his passion for sustainable design, he is taking advantage of the CAPLA Master of Architecture accelerated master’s program (AMP), which allowed him to start the M Arch program during his SBE senior year. He will complete the M Arch in 2024.

The Southwest Indian Agricultural Association, Inc. (SWIAA) is offering five annual scholarships. The scholarships are in memory of Dr. Roe B. Lewis in the amount of $2,000.00 each.  All scholarships are available for undergraduate and/or graduate students.

In memory of Mario K. Marks, The Southwest Indian Agricultural Association, Inc. (SWIAA) is offering five annual scholarships in the amount of $1,000.00 each. The scholarships are available for intermediate and high school tribal groups or individual tribal students.

The English Department will offer a section of First Year Composition II (ENGL 102 - Section 426) that focuses on Indigenous culture in the United States and Canada using contemporary and historical articles and stories. Native American/Indigenous students are encouraged to register for this course to work on their writing in a relevant and nurturing environment.
